Composting or septic toilette?

I will start by defining both:

composting toilet is a toilet that uses predominantly the aerobic process to treat human excreta. Because they use no water for flushing, they are also called a „dry toilet„.

A flushing toilet is a toilet using water for flushing down the excreta. Such a toilet is connected to either a septic tank or to a municipal water system.

Let’s find out which is the right one for you:

The flushing toilete is good for you if

  • you will always have a municipal water system connection or access to a septic tank
  • your house is more a fix than a mobile structure

Pros of a flushing toilet:

  • you stay in your comfort zone
  • press the flushing button which can be a joyful habit for some
  • you can check the quality of your urine and understand if you need to drink more fluids

Cons of a flushing toilet:

  • its heavier than a composting one (if you have weight concerns)
  • you need a septic and water connection
  • water usage is min. 35 l /day/person
  • detergents and deodorants are needed
  • maintanance costs

The composting toilet is good for you if:

  • you are not in one of the situations described above
  • you want to live a sustainable life and save 35 l of water per day and 12.775 l/year
  • you do not want to be dependent on resources which allows you to park your house or Rv also in places where there is no water connection or septic tank
  • using a different type of toilet doesn’t bother or embarass you
  • you are not bothered by the fact that as a man, you need to sit on the toilete, regardless of the job you need to do
  • the fact that the toilete needs to be emptied every 30 days or so, doesn’t bother you
  • you want to start a permaculture project which could put the toilet products to a good use
  • you are prepared to pay 800-1200 euros for a composting toilete or are ready to build it alone

Pros of a composting toilete:

  • it is easier to use than it looks
  • weight – it weights less than a flushing toilete
  • you can easily move it around and take it with you if you need to
  • almost zero maintenance costs: no detergents or deodorants needed, septic sewer
  • sustenability, saving the water, feeling good, being a positive example for others

Cons of a composting toilete:
– price
– emptying it
– the need of a composting box or incinerating possibility
